Thai Coconut Cookies

Thai Iced Tea

I thought that if there could be anything better than Thai Iced Tea, it might be the Thai Coconut Cookies and their recipe listed on the side of the box of tea. Unfortunately, neither the cookies nor the recipe were that great.

Can you figure out what’s wrong with this recipe (copied from the back of the box)?

Here are the ingredients:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup Thai tea powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup shredded coconut

And the directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300F (190C).
  2. In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar, and Thai tea until smooth.  Add egg and mix.
  3. Combine dry ingredients and stir into the mixture until well blended.  Add coconut flakes and mix.
  4. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  5. Spoon dough into 1/4 inch drops on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
  7. Allow cookies to sit on baking sheeting for 5 minutes before placing on a wire rack to cool.

HINT:  The problem is not with the ingredients.

  1. if these directions are supposed to be followed sequentially, i’m surprised that the oven is preheated to 300 at the very beginning, when step 4 asks for you to refridgerate the mixture for 30 minutes. what oven takes at least 30 minutes to pre-heat (the time it takes for the mixture to solidify)

  2. As the Technical Editor here at chickenmonkeydog.com, I am pleased to report:

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Ladies and Gentlemen, our faithful reader Pat has correctly answered our Thai Coconut Cookies Quiz. Congratulations, Pat! You’re the next contestant on ‘The Price is Right!’

    • Maybe everyone should win? I used a conversion calculator and maire is indeed correct – 190C would be 374F. I’m also not sure how you could measure only 1/4 inch of cookie dough. I’m impressed with the number of things found wrong with this recipe!

Is there a translation issue here? Was it originally in Thai?

  3. i think that what we have learned is that if ‘thai cookies’ are good, the cook probably doesn’t follow their own recipe……but isn’t that the case in all cultures?
