A heavy rain in Philadelphia last night, followed by a dry morning, left thousands of worms stranded on the sidewalks of the city.
Where do all these worms come from? They seem to be equally distributed down the street regardless of whether they are anywhere near a plot of dirt.
Also, why is rain such a devastating event for worms? Does anyone know why the worms don’t just come to the top of their earthen homes and wait out the storm there, as opposed to attempting to cross concrete patches and getting stranded?
I always feel bad for the worms. It seems like every big rain causes a great wave of worm death.
