Bananas by the Serial Number

Bananas

Banana sticker on bananas

I picked up some bananas the other day. They seemed to have a serial number — or some identification number — on them. What’s up with that?

I also love that Dole marks its bananas as bananas. Don’t you think that everyone in the supply chain would know a banana? Maybe in the past before the use of these stickers, some new guy in the shipping department thought they were pineapples and sent them to the wrong store.

  1. The number is so when you check out you can enter it into the register (especially now when so many stores have self-checkout so it is not just store employees ringing up the products). I am not sure why they state that it is bananas….maybe to clarify that it is not plantains?

  2. Whoever can figure out how to genetically engineer fruits, veggies and meats with bar codes will make a bundle.

  3. When I was in high school, and working part time as cashier at the local grocery store, we were encouraged to memorize the PLU codes for the various fruits and vegetables sold by the store. Now, all these years later, “4011” is the only one I remember. All grocery stores use the same PLU for bananas — and it is the only one I still remember!
