Worst Crime Thing

As you may have been able to tell from my earlier post on graffiti, it has been on my mind and I’ve seen a lot, but this piece seemed especially interesting. I found this piece of graffiti in Pittsburgh and I couldn’t help but think about the kid writing it.

To me it says, "You call me a ‘bad kid’.  You tell me this is the ‘worst crime thing’. But look around, we’re in the midst of terrible violence and crimes of man destroying man, is my graffiti enough to make me a ‘bad kid’?"

I was impressed as well with the location; I’m not entirely sure how the artist / vandal got up there to paint this highway support beam about 60 feet above the ground.

  1. i am impressed by 2 things…. (i) the effort that must have been required to reach to location and (ii) the amount of free time that someone must have to think up and carry out a plan for this graffiti. Who has time in this busy world to plan out a new and challenging location for graffiti, come up with a design and color scheme and then to carry out the whole plan? This guy has upper management written all over him!

I wondered the same thing! Or maybe he / she just had a couple cans of spray paint around and figured he / she may as well do something impressive with them if bothering defacing public property.

With all that effort required, do you think it was a one person project or a group?

  3. I would have to suggest that although the tagger’s efforts do show an enterprising spirit, I would like to see the risk assessment that he or she carried out beforehand. Were all the risks properly considered? Were proper safety measures in place before the project started? Was sufficient insurance secured for the work to be done?

Let’s not make this young tagger the boss just yet — I have concerns about his or her approach to health and safety in the workplace.

    “Elfin safety”? What? 😉

    @ Conall:

I think what is interesting is his Banksy like spirit in painting this. That said Tate Modern has a street art exhibit going on right now. They got 6 ‘artists’ to paint on the listed building’s exterior. I should be so lucky as to even paint the exterior of my own listed house…

See video of these; some are seriously big:

Would you say that BADKID is someone who would fit well in a position where he would have as
many as four people working right underneath him?

Thanks for that video link. Very cool idea. I have been to the Tate a few times and they’ve always got neat works. I didn’t realize that our posts on graffiti were so en vogue.
