The Names in the Games

Over the weekend, as I watched the US lose to a well-organized Ghana team, I started wondering about the nickname of the US team. Ghana is called the Black Stars. The Italians are the Azzuri and the French Les Bleus. England are the Three Lions. So, what is the US called? I was thinking maybe ‘Stars and Stripes’, but that didn’t sound right. So, as we do with all matters trivia these days, I googled it.

The US soccer team is called …

Wait for it …

It’s gonna blow you away …

… the Men’s National Team.

Really?!? Is that the best we got? In a competition with the Super Eagles, the Indomitable Lions, the Red Fury and the Blue Samurai, we’re called the Men’s National Team. How lame is that? (There is a full listing of all the nicknames of the teams that competed in World Cup 2010.)

So, dear readers, we welcome your suggestions for a new nickname for the team. Here’s what we came up with so far:

  • The Damn Yankees
  • The *!”£%$@ Americans

(Admittedly, we started making our list after we had a couple of beers and the end of the US – Ghana match.)

What can you come up with?

  1. How about “World Champions”?

Seems like our best shot at getting that title any time soon. We bestow it on ourselves in baseball and basketball already, so why not soccer also?

  2. @ Forkboy,

I am not so sure I would vote for your suggestion.

I think ‘Stars and Stripes’ is probably the most likely a choice.

Maybe we could go with the ‘Screaming Eagles’ in reference to our national bird?

  3. Oh I like Screaming Eagles! It strikes fear!

I’ve actually thought about this issue before, as a Green Bay Packers fan (the other football). Bears! Lions! Vikings! These are team names that are designed to intimidate! They match their sport – they are manly men! These teams will show no mercy!

And then you have teams like the 49’ers, Colts, and Packers…. What a letdown (I can say it, because it’s my team).
