Tagged at Owner’s Expense

In a parking lot next to my hotel, there was this sign posted:

No parking sign

Pemit Parking Only – Unauthorized Vehicles Will Be Tagged At Owners Expense

I could only think of three things they could possibly mean by "tagged" in that sentence:

(1) Your car will be labeled with a tag . Well, surely that can’t be that expensive, nor even that much of a deterrent.  Worst case, the tag is a sticker and it is a pain to remove from the car.

(2) Your car will be hit by another car . Well, that seems a bit harsh, and the costs could vary greatly, depending on what your car is worth and how badly it gets hit, but I kind of like the draconian approach to parking policy enforcement.

(3) Your car will be graffitied on . I don’t have any idea what the going rate is for a tagger’s services, but if you need a new paint job anyway, this might be a good place to leave your car.

  1. Isn’t “tag” also a game of chase, which kids play in America? May be they will play a game of chase with the car and then have the owner pay for his own fuel and the chaser’s fuel too?

  2. Or that the car will be given a nickname at the owner’s expense, which can’t be too bad, unless the nickname’s derogatory (guzzler, slow-coach, beat-up-old-hag, pile-o’-junk and so on) and results in the car having serious self-esteem issues. The subsequent visits to the shrink would be expensive.
    So no, don’t park there!

  3. Conall,

The sign clearly limits parking to permits. Why would a vehicle even be in a spot designated for a permit?

Another valid interpretation…add that to the list. Could get quite expensive with fuel prices as they are!

    @ Quirky Indian

Would the car or the owner be going to the shrink?

    @ Mark

Good point. That’s an interpretation that would cause confusion in parking areas around the globe I think! I know that I am always looking for a place to park my permits but find that the spots are filled by vehicles.
