A few months ago I subscribed to an online newsletter that would send me weekly news regarding sustainability issues. After a few months, I decided to unsubscribe (although I can’t think of the specific reason why).
Yesterday, I got an email from this group with the title “We Want You Back!” This email went on to list reasons why I ought to re-subscribe to their newsletter. While I appreciate the attempt to lure me back, isn’t the fact that I unsubscribed an indicator that I do not want email from them?
So, I scroll down on this “We Want You Back!” email and discover at the bottom a little “Unsubscribe” link. Curious, and hopeful that they might take me seriously this time I clicked the link.
I was sent to a page where I was informed that I was now unsubscribed from their “DoNotMail” email list!
Wait, what?!? They have a DoNotMail list and that was the list they decided to send an email to soliciting re-subscription! What would they need to call the list so that people would realize they should not be emailing the people on it?
Furthermore, does unsubscribing from a “DoNotMail” list imply that it is now ok to email me?
They now have your phone number and will be cold-calling you shortly.
Ring, ring. Ring, ring. Riiiiiiing, riiiiiiing.
You probably have now been moved to their “DoNotMailUnlessYouReallyReallyThinkItIsImportantThisTime” distribution list.
