Open Sesame

Nope, I did not realize that garage door openers still existed …

But, honestly, who travels with a garage door opener?

CMD Readers: is it wrong to assume that garages should be voice-activated by now?

  1. Yes. Voice recognition sucks right now. Unless it is short distance, like a microphone. A rustling of leaves could open your garage door.

  2. On the topic of garage door openers, how many different radio frequencies are assigned to the manufacturers of such? With all the automatic garage door openers in the world, it seems like one door opener and its specific frequency must be able to open thousands, if not millions, of doors.

Anyone have any info on this?

  3. I wonder why one would need to bring a garage door opener on a trip anyway? when you come home, if you’re driving your own car, why not just leave the opener in the car. If you’re taking a taxi, then wouldn’t you first enter the house through the house door?

Unless, perhaps Liam is on to something and you might want to take the opener with you on the road to see how many garages you can open at your destination?

  4. I don’t recall why we tried it, but back in high school we discovered that our home garage door opener did open a garage door about 20 minutes away.

  5. We recently rented a car for a cross-country road trip. We DID take our garage door opener with us on the trip — since we left from our home and were returning to our home. And, yes, we remembered to take it out of the car before we returned the rental!

  6. Confession….I lost my garage gate remote on a recent trip out of town. I think there is a high probability that I left it in the rental car. So, this sign is for idiots…LIKE ME (there was no such sign at the car return, but I wish that there had been). I wish it was voice activated because it stinks not being able to get into the parking lot.
