In the Business of Head Lice

Wow! Is head lice a big enough problem that resolving it is a viable business opportunity?

Hair Fairies

I am assuming the happy kids on the sign have already been “helped” with their head lice issues. Geez, that’s one waiting room I wouldn’t want to sit down in!

Thanks to a Chicago commuter for leading our Chickenmonkeydog editor to this quirky storefront!  Remember to snap pictures and send us your quirky observations!

  1. For the record… I think people should give lice more credit… they are sneaky… and I know people who may even be editors of ChickenMonkeyDog who have battled lice outbreaks…

  2. I have to think that this business is probably run by a husband-wife, or life-partner team. Can you really see anyone responding to a helped wanted ad that starts off with ‘Help pick lice out of other people’s hair’?

  3. Uhhh…yeah, is the answer to your question. look around you next time you go to the drugstore. All those lice meds are making someone a CRAPLOAD of moolah!! And now, look at these places popping up all over that actually pluch the little licies out of your head FOR YOU. Now that is service. Kinda gross, but thats definately service.

Getting rid of them is getting harder, so yeah, if someone can make that easier for you, that is something people want…

who can blame them. lice are nasty little vampires that must be stopped! 🙂 Cute picture above too.

Thanks for stopping by chickenmonkeydog and thanks again for leaving your thoughts behind.

I guess head lice is probably in the category of “things you rarely (if ever) contract, but which you want rid of IMMEDIATELY if you do catch.” So I guess the profit margin on a service like this is pretty high. It’s not like customers are going to “hold off and see if it goes away” because they think the price is too high.

  5. Hi Conall! You are absolutely correct that it’s in the “you-definately-don’t-wanna-have-it” catagory…and I think because it is getting INCREASINGLY (I mean soooo hard) harder to kill every year, and the child is not allowed back into school until both the lice AND The eggs are gone…and the fact that it spreads very quickly to other family members and your home itself (think carpeting, cars, beds, toys, etc) you can see why this is becomming such a frightening experience for most people (usually parents of elementary school children, which is where it lives and breeds, if you will).

So finding a fast solution seems to be the very most important thing (after breathing) to these parents.

I’m not sure about the profit margin being super high, but I know there is a huge demand for a service that can “rescue” you from lice hell…

And yes, most people tend to hold off and see if the issue will just go away, but the beauty (or ugly truth) about lice, is they will snuggle in, and stay there for decades if you let them (if you don’t do anything, that is). They are VERY good at what they do, and they are getting better by the day…

    :)Great post!
