Although it can’t feed a hungry child, nor stop an attacking army, nor cure any disease, there is is something incredibly powerful and moving about a beautiful sunset. If more people had a chance to take in the tranquility of the setting sun, I’m pretty sure we might move a bit closer to world peace.
One of things in St. Augustine’s theological thought is that humans have lost the sense of wonder due to original sin that we can only regain with grace. He would also argue that more wondrous than a sunset, an ocean view, a skyline, or nature is the human person. When we regain the wonder in another human person in the various stages of human life… then we are unto something that can change the world… just one line item from his thoughts…
As long as much of humanity finds itself engaged in simple, every day survival, there will be no time for reflection upon sunsets.
Leaves me feeling incredibly grateful for all that I have. (including CMD 🙂
How about we set aside time each day to watch the sunset but to do so while holding hands with one another? While that may sound fluffy, the power of a sunset and handholding combined could just be the trick to bring about this world peace thing.
