All Along the Watchtower

That watchful Canada goose on a building

On a recent jog through an business park not far from where I live, I heard the loud, angry squawking of a Canada goose. Although I could not see the angry goose, I could tell from the direction of the noise that the goose was in the air, albeit not too high up.

As I rounded a bend on the running path, I saw this goose aggressively patrolling along the edge of a light industrial building. Back and forth. Forth and back. A little intimidated, I jogged past, happy that the goose didn’t feel I was a safety threat.

About 15 minutes later, as I looped back around this same building (the business park has a nice running path circuit), this same goose was vigilantly keeping a watch from the corner of the same building. Shouting at passers-by. Looking left and right. Posturing.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a goose on the roof of any building. Nor have I seen a duck or anything with webbed footing, including a duck-billed platypus on the roof of any building.

  1. My current office building seems to be a rest stop for migrating geese. They (their wings particularly) are shockingly loud during landing. I have never seen them up there, but have definitely heard them regularly.
