Sleepy Sneezey

Why do we not sneeze in our sleep?

Seems like the nose is as likely to be irritated as we breathe during sleep as it would be during our waking hours.

  1. I believe it to be a feature of our autonomic nervous system which is what actually does the sneezing. A second hypothesis is that allergens are less likely to be flying about at night. A third idea is that we do sneeze, but we do not remember it.

  2. I know someone who wakes up sneezing due to severe allergies. She claims to be too sleepy to know if she wakes mid-sneeze or just prior. I would like to think that you can sneeze in your sleep.
