Worth the Import Duties?

Trans Am with after-market products

Some time ago, I snapped the above photo from a coach as it carried me into London along the M40. I thought that spotting such a car in the UK was very funny. So, I shared the above photo with my co-editor. We had an internal discussion about whether such a car scooting down the English motorway was quirky enough to warrant a post. In the end, we decided it wasn’t.

Then over this past weekend, a related question popped into my head. Does the above car warrant paying the shipping fees and import duties that the owner surely must have incurred to bring the car over from America? That point definitely warrants discussion here …

So, please discuss.

  1. Couple of thoughts:

    1. that car is absurd!

    2. clearly the payment of shipping fees and related import duties is only worth it to a single person (the owner of that vehicle), otherwise there would be a business of importing overly aftermarket outfitted trans ams and shipping them to the UK.

    3. I think that the existence of such a crazily modified car scooting down the highway anywhere would be worthy of some discussion.

    Cheers!

  2. Listen to your co-editor.

    Just kidding!

That picture is great. If the owner liked the car that much, more fun to him/her racing around the UK with it. Perhaps it had some sentimental value.

I would import a rickshaw from the mother country if I could. That being said, I could probably just build one in the US. That will be a project for the summer. I will provide a photo to CMD if it happens.

    Giddyup.

  3. I’m completely impressed that you were able to :
    a) spot this vehicle on the highway
    b) pull out your camera while it was still in view
    c) snap such a clear pic.

However, I’d make fun of someone driving this car in the US, much less when it requires time, money, and effort to import it.

  4. I can’t see a larger picture of course but it looks like a Corvette (as it looks too old to be a copycat Mazda number). Of course, it is worth every penny one has to pay! If one likes Corvettes, that is. I would pay for a Pagani Zonda but, oops, I am not allowed to drive.. :-/

  5. @ Mark –

Well argued and reasoned. Lawyer by trade, are you?

    @ Steve –

I did listen to the co-editor, then re-thought the matter and published my subsequent thoughts as I am the Technical Editor. I know where the ‘publish’ button is kept. Ha-ha!

Bring on the rickshaw! I totally want to see pictures. Don’t let us down!

    @ LaLa –

Welcome and thank you for the comments. I appreciate the praise. To be fair, the bus driver was doing most of the work, so snapping the photo was pretty easy.

    @ Shefaly –

Blimey! If that’s your taste in cars – and that’s an excellent choice indeed – then I wonder if you not being allowed to drive might have been a result of past speed violations. Ha-ha!

As for the car, I am not sure what make it is. It’s shape is that of a Pontiac Firebird, but as you noted, it has the Chevy emblem at the rear.
