Words for Free

Shelf of books

Currently at my local public library. I feel extremely grateful for the amazing public services they provide.

Free access to so many amazingly high-quality resources: books, magazines, movies, internet access, classes, research assistance, to name a few.

Must give a serious nod to our founding fathers, for their emphasis on the need for public libraries and to our current government for supporting and maintaining these institutions.  Thanks to public library staff, administrators and supporters as well!

When was the last time you availed yourself of the services provided by your local public library?

  1. As cool as public libraries are, I wonder what % of the population they are available to actually USE them? I bet the demographics of the users are pretty interesting.

  2. What’s really interesting is how the services of a public library have had to evolve. Right now in school I’m learning about how to involve teens using gaming, what kind of community programs we can host, and how to help people with their technology needs. It’s not just about Dewey Decimal numbers and shushing people!

  3. I confess I haven’t been in one in many years. But through my mid-20’s it was the go-to place for books and such.

My then-girlfriend really opened my eyes to the joys of reading.

  4. Who needs a library when we have Google? Well, I suppose Google hasn’t yet mastered the old book smell, shushing (@Ashley), and serendipity of a wonderful library.

But don’t be surprised if they do.

  5. I am at the library today. It’s nice. Free wifi. Sadly, very few laptop plugs, but I suspect that’s because the building was built before most people were carrying electronics everywhere.

It is also wayyyyy too hot in here! I think over compensation for the frigid air outside.

  6. Have to say that while I love the concept of a library, I always seem to ‘rent’ books rather than borrow. I never get them back on time and then owe a fine. I don’t argue the fine in principle or practice, but I think fear of incurring more debt (even if only in increments of $1.20) keep me from frequently my local library more often.
