Due to some rather unfortunate (but not terribly damaging) typos of late, I have changed the settings in Thunderbird, which I use to send and receive email. Now, Thunderbird automatically checks the spelling before sending an email. Better that way. Safer. Less embarrassing.
The other day, I was emailing an old friend for the first time with these new settings, when I was surprised by the suggested alternative spelling for my friend’s name:
Operandi! How James Bond is that, like Modus Operandi! Oh, now I wonder what my spell check name would be. My friend Kieran would be Operandi, but what would I be? I must have already added my name to the computer’s dictionary – since Thunderbird skips over my name without comment – and so I may never know.
Mine is Shuffle and a company I worked for once (Psion), Word helpfully offered ‘Poison’ on which I shall remain mum 😉
Hi Shefaly – That’s a cute spell check name. And apparently, your previous place of employment might not have been the ideal place to work. I’ll not ask further.
By the way, I also stumbled upon a frightening spell check surname. When I was replying-all to a group email, Thunderbird wanted to spell one of the surnames in the group as ‘Satanically’. I was a bit concerned about that …
Liam: Yes, cute alright. That place of work, btw, does not exist anymore. At one time, you remember Psion handhelds were all the rage? 🙂
‘Satanically’?? For what surname? That is quite a suggestion, isn’t it?
BTW whom do you host with? I am looking for a hosting company that does what it says on the tin, for my website and blog (professional stuff so can’t afford to stuff up, you see). Thanks.
I am going to watch James Bond tonight ironically enough.
@ Shefaly – I host with Memset (http://www.memset.com). I’ll drop you a more detailed note (via email) over the weekend about it.
As for the surname, I deliberately didn’t want to post the surname. I don’t personally know the individual on the group email with the devilish spell check surname — and didn’t want to offend someone I didn’t know.
@ Operandi – Oh, is Quantum of Solace out in the US? I have been playing the flying game lot on the 007.com website.
@ Liam:
Thanks. I shall look forward to hearing from you.
My spell check name is Canal, which, is not nearly as exciting as “Operandi” nor even that different than my actual name. I guess I shall leave the under cover operations to Kieran.
Well, Conall, don’t sell your spell check name short. Canals are all about travel and transport. I know you like to travel and get about, so perhaps your spell checker knows a little more about you than you expected!
@ Liam –
I’ve certainly seen my fair share of canals in Venice, Amsterdam and many other cities. The most famous of canals have eluded me so far though, the Suez and the Panama.
Spellcheck and I will have to take a little trip!
