The world is blessed with a wonderful and bountiful array of fruits. In the age of air transport, we can experience native fruits from all corners of the world. It’s truly a magnificent thing.
As I was preparing to eat a banana the other day, I suddenly noticed a ‘banana string’ that had escaped my previous inspection. I quickly peeled it away and threw it in the bin.
That wayward banana string got me to thinking: what other fruits have bits that no one likes to eat (aside from things like the banana peel, melon rind, etc.)?
People eat apples with — and without — the skin.
Some fruit eaters don’t mind the bits of white left on an orange after peeling; others, like myself, spend entirely too long picking away all the white bits to making eating peeled oranges worthwhile.
I’ve seen people eat kiwi fruit with the hairy skin and peeled.
Does anyone actually eat banana strings?
No
I used to be a lot more meticulous about picking them off the banana than I am now. I am not a big fan of bananas but I eat them for the nutritional value. I don’t like the strings, but I don’t really like the banana so I don’t see the point in the time to make sure I get every string removed before consuming the fruit.
I guess I put in some effort to remove the strings, but I don’t really mind if one or two stick around.
And I like bananas.
How about orange and grapefruit peels? I knew someone who would eat the peel from a grapefruit and all the chocolatiers seem to think that covering orange peels in chocolate is enticing!
And lemon zest?! Shave off bits of the skin and that’s good, but not too much.
