After a recent hot air balloon ride, I was curious to learn about the history of ballooning. I came across this gem of an anecdote at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum that was funny and fascinating in equal measures. So, I thought I’d share it with CMD readers.
Skimming Over the Water
The balloon almost fell into the English Channel. The two aeronauts were forced to heave all cargo overboard to gain altitude. They jettisoned ropes, anchors, seats, scientific instruments and other items, even stripping to their underwear. They threw out everything except the package of the first international airmail, delivered successfully upon their safe landing in the Felmores Forest, France.
