Atop all these glorious structures, temples to the ingenuity and hard work of humankind, are heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Will future generations look back across the ages and wonder why we worshipped HVAC systems?

No.
I don’t know about all that, but I know that for some reason I find HVAC systems fascinating and strangely artistic.
Btw, @jordan, is that no they won’t wonder why because it’s obvious we did not worship HVAC, or no they won’t wonder why because it’s obvious why we did worship HVAC?
There won’t be a they. We’ve changed our planet to the extent that no later civilization can rise. At least not a human one. If we do not maintain stability in our current civil state, our race is done for.
That is not to say that we can’t change that ourselves, but it would require sacrifice which is something human kind is miserable at.
Vive le singe!
Honestly, the other primates are in an far more delicate position. Without the human brain, they can’t adapt to the changing environment as quickly as we can. The more primitive species on the planet will most likely take the foothold. That is, if we don’t undergo a sterilization event.
I’d be better then to say:
Vive el cafard!
BTW, I’m not saying things are hopeless, I’m only saying they are far worse than anyone wants to admit.
