Steel: The Forgetful Man’s Friend*

Steel icon on Pepsi can

For years, I have suffered a particular habit that causes my wife consternation from time to time as it results in a untidy clean-up required in the freezer. No, nothing perverse or so untoward.

Let me explain.

I like ice-cold Pepsi out of a can. My favourite Pepsi is that available in the US, but as I live in England, I must suffer for UK Pepsi. (There’s a topic for another day.) To get my Pepsi cold enough to reach the state of perfection – just starting to turn into an icy slush- I pop a can in the freezer to chill it.

The problem lies in that I am a forgetful person. I have been known to leave cans of Pepsi in the freezer for hours, overnight or even for days.

Recently, I was pleased to discover that UK Pepsi is sold in steel cans, rather than in aluminum. (I still can’t bring myself to take aluminium seriously as a word.) Yet again, I left a can of Pepsi in the freezer from about 4.00 pm until breakfast the following morning. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the can had not exploded and blasted brown ice everywhere!

And here’s a close-up of the top of the can:

I’d like to see an aluminum can do that!

  1. COOL! I want a steel pepsi now. I am forever doin crap like that too. Leave the cup on the top of the car and drive away, stuff like that. Or the worst, Ill start a pan of water on the stove for tea (I don’t have a whistling kettle) and go back into my office and sit down on the computer and start coding again … well I get to thinking about code and forget I HAVE A POT BOILING ON THE FRIGGIN STOVE! Well that don’t have to happen too many times before you get pretty worried for yer safety. I finally found this thing at http://www.forgetfulmonk.com which allows me to schedule an email reminder to myself to be sent in like 15 minutes. (it’s free too) So Im coding away and an email shows up in my mailbox.. ‘OH YEAH’ run out and save the house from burning down. If yer anything like me, which it sounds like you are, that might help. that or get a digital cooking timer, I use that sometimes too. Good luck!

  2. In light of yesterday being Earth Day, I wonder whether steel or aluminum cans are better for the environment?

And why would UK and US Pepsi choose different materials? Is steel cheaper across the pond?

  3. @ Meghan –

Um … no idea. I just drink from the steel can because that’s what’s available to me.

And I too think it’s strange that Pepsi use steel in the UK, but aluminum elsewhere. Not sure why that is … I don’t think steel is any less expensive here than elsewhere. I open your question up to the audience for assistance …
