The Pestle or the Mortar?

A pestle and mortar

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a discussion with family and friends developed around whether, if we had to choose one, we would want to be the pestle or the mortar.

As I engaged in lively debate, I thought this is a topic that begged to be shared with the chickenmonkeydog community.

So, please engage in the conversation. Share your preferences and reasons via the comments below.

  1. I can’t fathom what possible reason anyone might want to be the mortar, having things smashed against you constantly, rather than being the one doing the smashing. Or is there some other metaphor here I’m missing?

  2. Rather than being a bully that just pushes things around and points fingers like a pestle, the mortar is the savior that helps all discover their inner-most beings and brings them to delicious enlightenment.

  3. I like the idea of being the mortar. No matter how hard the pestle (life) slams into me, nor how often it tries to jar me, I hold my shape, maintain my functionality and carry on. Moreover, as the mortar, my functionality is not dependent on my relationship with the pestle. I can be a bowl, a cup, a small, durable hat and more.

While I won’t disparage the pestle, I think I am more of a mortar.
