New Pint Glasses Invented

A shatterproof glass? The British government introduced new shatterproof pint glasses last week.  Below is an excerpt from the first part of the article:

There are about 87,000 alcohol-related glass attacks each year, with many resulting in hospital visits, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said as he introduced the two prototype shatterproof pint glasses.

Really?  That many?  And the CMD Creative Editor and I discussed how safety was not our first thought when we learned of the new pint glass.  It would just be nice to not clean up all that mess when one breaks!

The article points out that the new versions were developed using glass instead of plastic because glass feels good in the hand, it feels cold.  Plastic is warm. I definitely agree, but does the new glass weigh the same?  That would be crucial for me.

In addition, one of the versions uses a double wall and therefore the glass could keep the beer colder for longer. In my opinion, if you need a special glass to keep your beer colder for longer then you are drinking too slowly.

  1. Years ago, I went to a Milwaukee Bucks game. (Yeah, I know, who goes to the Bucks’ games?), up in Milwaukee. They were serving cold beer in plastic bottles. I was surprised at how cold the beer bottles were, especially when compared to the plastic bottles used for soda.
