How Much Power is Too Much Power?

unplugged power cord with LED light glowing

I noticed lately that the little blue LED light on my laptop cord continues to glow as powered on even after I’ve removed the cord from the wall. In some instances, the little blue light stays on for 2 to 3 minutes after the plug was removed from the wall. This concerns me.

When it comes to electronics, power tools, etc., I confess a severe lack of competency. My dearth of deftness leads me to worry about accidental electrocution from my laptop cord. (For instance, I pondered touching the cord with my tongue to test the strength of the lingering power in the cord. In the end, I decided against that approach.)

I appreciate the LED lights probably don’t require a load of electricity to run, but can we get a little assistance from our chickenmonkeydog readership as to what our exposure to danger levels may be here?

Oh, the dangers I am exposed to by a life in the modern office.

  1. That’s the blue light of death. Do not look directly at it and you should be okay. If your gaze lingers too long you will undoubtedly become a zombie.

  2. That box on your computer cable is an AC to DC converter it is basically a large capaciter and as such does store a little bit of residual juice for a few seconds. The computer end is as safe as handling a D battery. The cable that plugs into wall is another matter, but as with any cable as long as it is not damages it should be safe. They make these things relatively foolproof.

  3. @Jordo: You’re worried about “foolproof” when we’re talking about zombies here?

Oh… hold it. NOW I get it. Someone is already a zombie… trying to grow the ranks.

  4. Jordo has the explanation I would give.
As for the fool/zombie mix, someone that eats its own brains.
