Holiday Poetry

Poets Corner Whilst walking about the Isle of Wight on a recent little getaway, I chanced upon a cute little cottage, just a short walk from the sea.

Then I noticed the name of the cottage, painted on the front gate. And I looked closer to read it properly.

Poets Corner

And I thought, ‘Well, it’s certainly not the Grammarian’s Corner.’

But then I remembered that Tennyson spent many years of his life in the particular corner of the Isle of Wight in which I was rambling. So, maybe this ‘Poets Corner’ was lodging for E.E. Cummings.

And then I thought I would try to write a little E.E. Cummings style poem.

A family on holiday to the seaside goes,
under sky over cresting waves white as snows
to a place of weekend quiet
the children threw a little riot

night comes calming the nest
the children sleep but not the rest
holiday, holiday, holiday, holiday?
there has to be another way

  1. Whether it is “Grammarians’ corner” or ‘Grammarian’s corner” would depend on whether it is “poet’s” or “poets'”. No? As for your poem, e cummings or e goings, I don’t care ;-)[Ok this is a comment I left when another friend cited eec..]

  2. Hi Shefaly – Well spoken (or written, but spoken flows better here) on the grammar clarification. And very slick on the ee cummings joke. Very good.

  3. Hey Conall – A quick check on Wikipedia suggests that E.E. Cummings was not so loose with capitalisation and punctuation in his name as he was in his poetry.

Very timely that poem you mention. Very timely indeed.

  4. hello mom –

    have a look about net
    see what you can see
    won’t take long i bet
to see rhymes by cummings, mr. ee

    no, not every time
    nor on every line
    but often enough to say
    my poem is just fine

it’s close enough to his style
    it’s closer than a mile
it’s better than a big pile
and it’ll bring some a smile
