Fire the Translators!

translation-issues

Stepping into a McDonald’s recently for a lazy weeknight dinner, I spotted a big marketing poster on the wall.

Now, I’m certainly not a U.N.-certified translator, but I’ve been known to throw out the occasional “Yo quiero dos tacos, por favor” and “Estoy el hombre con el lapiz loco.” I’m pretty confident that “Heating Up the Season” does not translate into “EmociĆ³n y Sabor” in Spanish.

So, is this a matter of an oversight: someone did not closely proofread the posters before they went to print? Or is it more a reflection of the cultural differences between native English speakers and native Spanish speakers? I don’t know the answer, but I was confused by the poster.

  1. Both phrases are idioms which don’t translate. They both mean about the same thing; close enough for a marketing campaign.
