End of a Pen

A dying penDoes anyone know why it’s so satisfying to use a pen until it fully and finally runs out of ink?

This red pen has been doing diligent work for me at the office for months and is finally winding down its tour of duty. It strangely feels like some sort of accomplishment, having held on to a pen long enough and used it often enough to run it out of ink.

When I expressed this emotion, particularly of a red pen, my colleague commented that joy after doing so much red pen writing is a comment she’d expect from a teacher, not an engineer.
