Don’t Drop Anything!

Whenever I walk over a sidewalk grate of any kind, I always find myself imagining the grate giving way and me tumbling down into whatever garbage-filled pit lies below.

If the cover is a grate with big holes, I also imagine the catastrophe of dropping whatever I am carrying down through the grate (i.e. cell phone, keys, ID card) and try to think what I would do to try and recover the dropped item.

Does this thought pattern say anything about me personally? Does anyone else do this? Would a monkey be able to react quickly enough not to fall in if the grate gave way?

  1. All the time! I hold my pockets when I walk within nine feet of a drain cover.

Which, I’ve noticed that a lot of drain covers have my name on them. Do I own some iron works company I know nothing about?

  2. I can’t explain it either, but I do it all the time. Keys go into pockets. Cell phones into pockets. Nothing in my hands if it can be avoided.

I like to think it means I’m careful, but it’s far more likely a sign of severe mental damage.
