In the newpaper today I saw an article about a tax break that will be available to Americans who ride their bikes to work. Starting January 1st, 2008 there will be some sort of “cash back” given to people who use their bike regularly to get to work. Now, no details about how this plan is to be implemented were available in this article, but that’s not the point of this post. I just want to know, why won’t people who walk to work get a tax break too?
Car / Bike owners have fuel receipts and registrations to prove they use their vehicles. What about poor cyclists like me or you? Should we get receipts whenever we inflate our tyres or put on our helmets… lol

First, to clarify the post, when I say “bike” I mean “ride a bicycle,” not a motorbike.
Second, everyone agrees with you, even the businesses which would want to implement this policy are at a loss for how to quantify / track / reimburse cyclists, and they are all looking to the Internal Revenue Service for guidance!
I wish they offer tax breaks to cyclists here as well. I am willing to bike all the time because I am sick of paying direct and indirect taxes and not getting anything in return.
