Driving through one of the neighborhoods in my new home state of Pennsylvania, I saw a campaign sign stuck in the grass near a traffic light.
A few thoughts came to mind:
- Wow! How cool is it that Pennsylvania (PA) actually has an official elected position of ‘Tax Collector’. That’s positively biblical. Hilarious! Do other states have this? Or could it be because PA is a Commonwealth?
- From the home-made look of the sign (as opposed to ho-made), I wonder if Ben LaGarde is looking to reduce our taxes and is happy to do things in frugal fashion. That particular sign certainly is a clear way to demonstrate that approach as a campaign promise.
Well, I dig the cheap sign. It’s an appeal to the slow economy. We all have had to make cutbacks and it’s good to see a politician who is savvy enough to recognize that and make cutbacks too.
However, I don’t know that I’d want a public official who takes this homemade route. It would be like having a banker or lawyer show up in a Hawaiian shirt. I just expect a bit more decorum in certain occupations. It gives me a sense of certitude. I’m thinking, “This tax collector might start sending out forms written in crayon.”
