Traveling in Herds

A herd of cars

When you’re taking a long road trip, have you ever noticed that cars and trucks seem to travel in herds? A big group of cars together, then miles of empty road, followed by another herd of cars traveling together. I feel a great sense of comfort when I approach such a herd, especially at night. The darkness and loneliness of the open road is temporarily thrown off by the reddish glow of taillights and shining stare of headlights.

Also, what would you call a herd of cars and trucks traveling together?

  1. I’ve long suspected vehicles get grouped together like this because they believe (consciously or otherwise) that traveling in a pack is safer when it comes to speeding and potentially being pulled over by the highway patrol/police.

Not unlike the way fish school together…

And I’m thinking “convoy”…. but that’s not really the same thing. Or maybe it is.

  2. It’s officially known as a “dog pack” and considered a dangerous thing as it reduces ones potential routes to escape a collision.

  3. @ Jordan,

It certainly does when people don’t leave sufficient, safe space between themselves and the cars in front!

So, it’s called a “dogpack”. I think we can find a better term for that.

    Ideas?

  4. Perhaps it should be a hord? Named after Henry Ford and all that he did to make the modern car company.
