Bluetooth Buffoonery

Bluetooth earpieceHave you ever used a Bluetooth earpiece?  I’m new to the sort, yet find myself uncomfortably uncertain about its reliability. I make a call and I always hope that it connects to the Bluetooth or I have to quickly scramble to slam the phone against my ear to save face.  I leave a voicemail and I don’t get the impression that my voice is actually being carried to the recipient, like it’s just shooting forward, lost in space.

Maybe one needs to see the microphone to feel that his/her voice is actually going through, instead of this fancy Jawbone tech? Or maybe we just need to have our hand to our ear with our neck crinked?

Don’t even let me get started on the feeling of a rubbery plug in your ear … Or even worse, how stupid one feels when s/he engages in a conversation with someone only to realize that a Bluetooth is hiding on their other ear.

So what do you say? Bluetooth earpieces — yeah or nay?  Any other tech that makes you feel like a buffoon?

  1. I love having a Bluetooth device and have owned one for many years. I like how I can continue to use both my hands while carrying on a conversation (particularly helpful in the car). It makes longer conversations with my parents so much simpler as I can continue to do most things about the house as I don’t have to hold my phone.

Now, I will concede it might look strange to others to see some person who looks as if they are speaking to themselves, but as I already do this without the benefit of a Bluetooth device I’ve got nothing to lose.

In other words: it pays to be odd regardless.

  2. Embarrassment aside, it seems to me that if you have to “slam the phone against [your] ear”, one thing you’re not doing is saving your face.

  3. Bluetooth is not just for ear peices. Its a low yield wireless networking techology. Its meant to connect all of your devices together. That said, it does kinda suck. This is why you only see it in hands free devices. To avoid collisions it has to be within five feet or so of the device. I used to use blue tooth for my keyboard and mouse on the computer on my television, but now I use an RF bridge. I have to have the RF reciever out in the middle of my livingroom, but at least it doesn’t lock up and start repeating keyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyys. That is so annoying!
