Recently, I stayed in a hotel which had a small motion sensing light at the bottom of the bedside table. Each time you walked in front of the light, even eight feet away, the small light went on.
My assumption is that this feature is designed to make it safer and easier to find your footing, and perhaps slippers, as you awaken in a dark room, before you turn the room lights on. Or perhaps, to help you find your way to the bathroom in the middle of that night without waking up others in the room.
I still haven’t decided how I feel about it. A nice touch, or too much?
