Hanging Out in a Man-Made Rain

Last week in a hotel room in Chicago, I saw this sprinkler and “not for hanging clothes” warning.

All well and good (no one wants a flooded hotel bathroom), but the placement caught me off guard.

Is it even possible to hang something from that sprinkler?

I wonder if issues in the past prompted this signage on the ceiling. Seems unlikely that many people are tall enough to read the warning, or even reach the sprinkler.

Also, people… just use the other hook that is right in front of you on the door!

  1. Really? Contact with a hanger will activate a fire sprinkler? Is that how these are designed?

“In case of fire: open closet, remove hanger, touch hanger to sprinkler to activate.”

  2. I think it’s actually if you *hang* something from the sprinkler it could break off (so their sign is doubly confusing since it just says “contact”)…

That’s certainly feasible for one coming from the wall, but this guy?
