Airline Voice Training

An airplane cabin

Contining our “Tales from the Airport” series, I want to talk to you today about voice training for airline staff.

Have you ever noticed the different style of speaking between the cabin staff and pilots? The stewards and stewardess are friendly, warm, sometimes a bit bubbly and welcoming. The pilots always have a deep voice and speak very slowly. Deliberately. Using limited words.

I wonder if airlines hold tannoy training for the different departments. This thought makes me giggle.

“Jim, Jim. You’re doing it wrong. See, we’re pilots. We talk in deep, dramatic voices. We speak v-e-r-y, v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-ly … with … long … pauses.”
